Since June 1st, Laos has required all imported passenger vehicles to be electric with exemptions for commercial trucks, public transportation, and specialized vehicles. The ban runs through the end of the year. Laos generates nearly all its electricity from hydropower, and since every drop of petroleum must be imported, it's paid for with scarce foreign currency. China is stepping in to fill the gap with New Energy Vehicles. Laos has signed agreements with 27 public and private partners to rapidly build out charging stations across the country. It shows just how quickly countries can pivot when the pressure is on.
